Part 2: Writing Sample
Writing Sample: The crescent moon shown down upon Pisgah National Forest, casting an eerie glow on the forest floor. The hoo-ho hoo-hooooo of a Great Horned Owl could be heard from the distance. Breaker perked his keen ears at the noise, being constantly alert for anything. He stood at the head of his pack, the Cedar Mountain Pack, who were awaiting his orders to commence the hunt on a herd of caribou. The Alpha Wolf gave the signal, a flick of his tail, for the wolf pack to commence hunting. Breaker had picked out an old caribou that was lagging behind the heard at its nightly feed. Two wolves began to circle around to the right side of the caribou, to try and chase it down the mountain slope and into the jaws of Breaker and two other wolves.
With a howl the two wolves began the chase, and Breaker and his two packmates raced down the slope, ready to intercept the caribou as soon as the two runner wolves had separated it from the herd. The signal came, a loud yelp which was the signal for Breaker to move in. With the silent stealth that only a wolf could muster, the three wolves attacked. Breaker’s job was the jugular, and that was where he was headed. Rip out the jugular, rip out the jugular, the phrase raced through the hunting wolf’s mind. The wolf next to him latched on to the back of caribou, which bellowed in pain. It was time; Breaker charged at the throat and thrashed out with his jaws. He sunk his razor sharp teeth in and tasted the warm blood from the throat. With a harsh thrash Breaker ripped out the prey’s throat. The caribou went a little father than toppled down. The wolf pack had succeeded in hunting. He smiled and wagged his tail. “You did well,” he told the wolves around him and then commenced howling the success of the hunt.
