Breaker padded silently up Cedar Mountain. The cedar and birch trees dappled the light, creating a dazzling wonderland on the forest floor. Anyone that saw Breaker could tell something was troubling him. He stared hard at the ground, not having any idea where he was going. Styx, what a strange wolf, Breaker stopped, inches away from a rowan tree. He watched as a rabbit bounded away, scarred off by the wolf.

Airborne Magic had been stalking the rabbit for hours. She had nothing better to do plus the pack was in need of food. In a flash the rabbit was in her jaws, motionless. The female wolf sighed with contentment. Airborne turned and set the rabbit down near Breaker. "Good afternoon my Lord." she said bowing low to him.
She sat beside him and licked his shoulder in a respectful way. "I've known you to long Breaker," she said, her smile fading "whats wrong?" This hardly seemed like the wolf she had known since they were pups. Breaker was her friend and leader and she would be by his side the whole way. Hoping he wouldn't take much notice she scooted a bit closer.

Breaker, looked at the rabbit, but he wasn't hungry, and gave the go ahead nod to Airborne to eat it. "Oh nothing, just doing some thinking," Breaker wasn't sure if he should tell her what had happened. He assumed that he would have to call a meeting and announce it to the whole pack. He decided that was the best option.
"There is going to be a meeting at the dens at noon," He told Airbone, hoping she wouldn't ask him any more questions. But his mind quickly drifted back to Styx, the red wolf, and the Grandfather Mountain Pack.

Airborne Magic nosed the rabbit. If Breaker was so upset about something, it had to be bad. Yet she didn't question his rule. "Yes my Lord." she said looking more at her paws than Breaker himself. A sigh escaped her thoart. She understood that Breaker was her leader now and that they were adults but she missed the old days. Her mind drifted back to when they were pups...
She had met Breaker in a forest clearing soon after being released. The two pups didn't even know one another but they had tumbled and played as if they had known eachother their whole lives. She missed those days...
A itch on her neck shoved her back into reality. She whimpered as her toe nail temporaliy caught on her radio collar and she whimpered. "I am really getting sick on this thing...." she muttered more to herself than Breaker.

Breaker simply nodded. The humans did not put a radio collar on him, only a selected few had them and they were nearly impossible to get off. Breaker felt bad for Airborne, as she was constantly tracked by humans, she was always being watched, in a sense. "Hopefully one day I'll figure out how to get those things off, but one things for sure, I don't think we will be rid of the humans for a long time."

Airborne nodded in agreement. Once again she was reminded of Breaker's compassion for her and the rest of his pack. It was almost overwhelming. "Breaker I honestly think that we'll die off before them." she said almost worried. In the preserve the wolves were protected but outside of it the world was run by humans.
"You know Breaker," she said pausing for a moment "on the inside I think that humans and wolves are almost the same. We have our certain ways of life and they have theirs but on the inside we all are alike." She sighed for what seemed like the hundredth time that day. "If only they realized that then maybe we could all live in peace."
Visons of being chucked into a cramped kennel formed in her mind and she trembled for a second. Why were humans so cruel? Didn't they see that wolves had feelings too? How would they fee; if they were tossed inside a tiny place and screamed at? It didn't make sense to her. Maybe it didn't make sense to anyone.

"As long as I'm around, I won't let our species die out," Breaker looked around at the beautiful mountain he lived on. Cedar, maple, birch, and beech trees, all swaying in the wind. "Humans need us, just like we need them. If they get rid of wolves, the world will deteriorate. Every animal has its own place in the world, and if that animal dies out, none are coming back," Breaker's words were gruesome words, but they were a reality to the wolves. Animals were living on a knife's edge, even in places like Pisgah National Forest, there are only so many places like them.
